The game

What you're walking into

George Town keeps its secrets in plain sight — on five-foot ways, temple walls and shophouse doors. Your team has one morning to find them.

Clear four zones

The heritage core is split into zones. Each one holds its own landmarks, riddles and photo missions. Finish one, move to the next.

Enter one museum

Every team must step inside one of George Town's museums along the way. The answer you need is in there somewhere.

Beat the clock

Photos and answers go to the Game Master by WhatsApp. Answer sheets are handed in at the end point — late sheets don't score.

The team that reads the city best wins — not the team that walks fastest.

You will pass a few hundred years of Penang on the way. Look up once in a while.

Rules of the street

  • Stay together. A team that splits up loses points, and usually loses a member.
  • No cars, no e-hailing between zones. This game is on foot.
  • Obey traffic, mind the motorbikes, and no running on the five-foot ways.
  • Dress and behave respectfully inside temples, mosques, churches and museums.
  • Ask locals — they are not a shortcut, they are part of the game.
  • If anyone feels unwell, stop, find shade, and call the Game Master.

Step one

Form your team

Do this before event day. Teams that arrive already formed start playing while others are still negotiating.

Six people per team. Every member takes one role — no spare passengers. Agree on a team name too; you'll need it to register.

Leader

Keeps the team together and on schedule, attends the briefing, and is our main contact. Registers the team on WhatsApp and adds everyone to the group.

Messenger

Carries a fully charged phone with data. Sends photos, answers and updates, and calls the Game Master if the team is stuck.

Documaster

Guards the game cards and answer sheet, writes down every answer, and returns all materials at the end point.

Treasurer

Holds any game cash, checks with the team before spending, and keeps track of what's left.

Navigator

Holds the map, plans the route between zones, and keeps the team from doubling back.

Timekeeper

Watches the clock, calls out time remaining, and makes sure the team reaches the end point on schedule.

The first four roles are the ones we deal with on game day. Navigator and Timekeeper keep your team moving — share them out if your team is short.

Gather point

Municipal Fountain Park, Lebuh Light — beside Penang Town Hall and the Esplanade. Search “Municipal Fountain Park” in your map app.

Parking

There is no parking at the fountain itself. Pick one of the car parks below and walk in. They fill up fast on weekends — come early, carpool, or use e-hailing.

  • St George's public carpark Lebuh Farquhar · about 4 min walk · 8am–8pm Closest to the fountain. Check the closing time against your finish time.
  • Wisma Great Eastern 25 Lebuh Light · about 3 min walk Same street as the gather point. Small, so arrive early.
  • Public Car Park at Jetty Lebuh Downing, near Fort Cornwallis · about 8 min walk Big open lot, usually has space. Hourly rate is on the higher side.
  • Union Street Parking @ GP Park Union Street · about 8 min walk · covered Sheltered, but the exit queue can be slow on weekends.
  • Chowrasta Market Multilevel Parking Lebuh Tamil · about 15 min walk · 24 hours Cheapest of the lot if you don't mind the longer walk in.
